- Description:
- The goal of this qualitative study was to explore students’ perceptions of trauma following the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as their perceptions of trauma-sensitive practices that are in place at their school to promote resilience and family engagement. The researcher sought to understand what ways, if any, students felt the pandemic contributed added stress to their lives, and what trauma-sensitive practices were in place at their high school to support key protective factors such as competence, connectedness, and community. Seven students who were 18 years old or older were interviewed for this study. Understanding their experiences can help to inform future practices and future research on school practices and procedures that support the development of resilience.

- Description:
- The purpose of this study was to examine the impact Jesuit tenets have on the attitudes of survivors of workforce reduction who were employed at Jesuit institutions of higher education during the early years of the COVID-19. The researcher interviewed seven current employees from five different Jesuit institutions to ascertain their feelings toward the tenets of magis (to do more), cura personalis (care for the whole person), and cura apostolica (care for the institution) and understand how each influenced their beliefs about workforce reduction. The research revealed that during the workforce reduction, cura personalis received greater privilege over cura apostolica because reduction in force was viewed as the elimination of people rather than the elimination of positions; employees of Jesuit institutions felt they were exploited in the name of cura apostolica and magis; and Jesuit tenets do not create heightened employment expectations associated with a psychological contract. Understanding Jesuit employees’ attitudes toward workforce reduction can shed light on the ability of buzzwords/tenets/credos within a corporate/educational/business culture to either strengthen or weaken said culture, especially during times of crisis such as one that is financial.

- Description:
- The goal of this qualitative study was to learn more about how online Ed.D. students are persistent and resilient in pursuing their academic goals during the Coronavirus pandemic. With the ongoing pandemic and remote learning circumstances, doctoral students are facing more challenges they must overcome to stay on track with their academics. More specifically, the researcher sought to understand what doctoral students believe are their biggest barriers to completion during the pandemic. To do so, the researcher interviewed 10 current students in the program who were within six credits of completing their program course requirements in order to learn more about their persistence and the factors they felt contributed to keeping them motivated and optimistic about maintaining a growth mindset, despite pre-existing and new pandemic-related challenges they encountered. Understanding students’ potential barriers to completion can help with future implications for practice within the program and the implementation of necessary student resources for support.

- Description:
- The purpose of this evidence-based practice project was to evaluate the effectiveness of using the PHQ-9 tool to assess depression. Currently, no tool is being used to assess and diagnose patients with depression in an outpatient psychiatric practice. Instead, patients are diagnosed with depression based on a diagnostic interview with the healthcare practitioner (HCP). This study's objective was to improve the current clinical depression assessment and diagnosis practice by using the PHQ-9 screening tool to improve accuracy in diagnosing depression. The PHQ-9 is a reliable and valid tool for assessing patients in identifying factors predictive of depression, as well as a reliable measure of depression severity. These characteristics and its brevity make the PHQ-9 a valuable clinical and research tool in psychiatric outpatient practices. The data from this study supported the rationale for implementing this screening instrument in this outpatient psychiatric practice. Forty-nine new patients ages 18–54 years who were seeking treatment for depression at a psychiatric practice who had not been previously diagnosed with depression completed the PHQ-9 as well as the diagnostic interview with an HCP. The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on patient depression was also explored. All participants were assessed using PHQ-9 and the diagnostic interview method. Data were analyzed using Stata 15 for descriptive and inferential statistics to examine the relationship between the two methods. Findings indicate that patients who expressed suicidal ideation during the clinical interview indicated the same on the PHQ-9. Results also show that PHQ-9 scores were significantly related to the severity of depressive symptoms. Finally, patients who indicated that COVID-19 had impacted them were significantly more likely to be assessed with major depressive disorder via the PHQ-9 instrument.
