A Sense of Belonging for Student Veterans
Public Deposited- Abstract
- In this qualitative research, ten student veterans studied the sense of belonging among non-traditional undergraduate student veterans at a private, liberal arts four-year university in New Jersey. These participants, representing various armed services branches, provided valuable insights into the challenges of transitioning from military to civilian life. Grounded theory methodology and open coding captured the participants' narrative stories and experiences during the transition from military to civilian life. By applying Schlossberg's Transition Model, specifically the "4Ss" of support, this study aims to uncover the mindset of student veterans and explore how the model relates to their transition into college after military service. It aims to address their sense of belonging and provide higher education professionals with practical recommendations for supporting their academic success.
