Abstract

The purpose of this mixed method study was to analyze the amount and likelihood that teachers will serve as teacher leaders. In the qualitative portion of this study, survey items were developed using the SASS developed by the NCES, as well as the literature review in this study. The researcher analyzed teachers’ perceptions of carrying out numerous teacher leader responsibilities, actions at colleges and universities that may prepare them to serve as teacher leaders, and actions at schools that display support for teachers to serve as teacher leaders. In the qualitative portion of this study, teachers responded to interview questions, yielding themes that elaborated on what they think about teacher leadership, educational leadership preparation, and school context. Qualitative data in the form of interviews and quantitative data in the form of surveys were used in unison to gain a more comprehensive analysis of teacher leadership, educational leadership preparation, and school context. The researcher structured analysis by themes obtained in interviews, and used survey data to expand upon and give insight to interviewed teachers’ themes. In this way, quantitative data served to supplement qualitative data. Survey data revealed that a small number of teachers act like teacher leaders, a small number of teachers act like their colleges or universities support them as teacher leaders, and a modest number of teachers act like their school context supports them as teacher leaders. When the researcher analyzed survey data using a Spearman test, acting like a teacher leader was weakly related to both teachers’ colleges and universities and teachers’ schools.
