Timing Is Everything? The Relationship Between School Schedule and Student Achievement in Central New Jersey Public High Schools

Public Deposited
Abstract
  • The allocation of time in secondary schools merits review because schools using traditional schedules may not be optimizing learning opportunities for their students. When the National Education Commission on Time Management and Learning (1994) released their report titled Prisoners of Time, it called for an overhaul of the U.S. secondary school organization, looking primarily at the schedule and the use of extended learning blocks. This researcher sought to examine the usage of learning blocks and compare it to that of the traditional schedule. By examining and comparing a cohort, the graduating class of 2019, of two Central New Jersey high schools of similar demographic background and enrollment numbers, but with different schedule types—block vs. traditional, the researcher aimed to determine which schedule type resulted in higher levels of student achievement when utilizing the corresponding scheduling structures. Based on the findings, the researcher offered insights and recommendations regarding the usage of time in secondary schools
