An Overview of the Disparities in Black Maternal Health

Public Deposited
Abstract
  • Black maternal health disparity persists as a significant public health crisis in the United States, where Black women are more prone to experience pregnancy-related complications and mortality compared to their White counterparts, regardless of socioeconomic status or education. This thesis explores the various causes underlying these inequities, including systemic racism, implicit bias in healthcare, social considerations of health, and barriers to access and quality care. The research examines historical context along with lived experiences to identify patterns of discrimination and bias. This thesis also evaluates community-led initiatives and policies aimed at addressing these gaps, highlighting the importance of culturally competent care. Ultimately, this thesis argues that improving Black maternal health requires a multifaceted approach to health equity that centers the voices of Black women, challenges institutional racism, and requires accountability within the healthcare system, and healthcare workers on the individual level
