Narratives That Inspire: Storytelling as a Strategic Tool in Nonprofit Marketing
Public Deposited- Abstract
- In an increasingly saturated digital landscape, nonprofit organizations face the unique challenge of marketing abstract missions rather than tangible products. This thesis investigates storytelling as a strategic marketing tool used to humanize organizational goals, foster trust, and catalyze stakeholder action. Using Camp Catanese, a Phoenix-based education nonprofit, as a qualitative case study, the research examines the connection between narrative communication and supporter engagement. The study employs a mixed-method approach, combining a structured content analysis of the organizatoin's digital communciation channels with a survey of 35 stakeholders, including donors, volunteers, and staff. Grounded in marketing theory, the analysis evaluates how personal naatives from students and educators influence perceptions of authenticity and emotional connection. Findings indicate that over 85% of respondents view the organization's storytelling as highly authentic, suggesting that mission-drive narratives effectively bridge the gap between abstract values and tangible support. However, the research also highlights a "utility gap" where the lack of a formalized storytelling framework can limit long-term strategic efficiency. The thesis offers actionable recommendations for nonprofits to institutionalize storytelling practices, ensuring narratives are not merely emotionally resonant but strategically aligned with organizational growth and donor retention.
