Hiring Practices of Elementary Public School Principals in New Jersey
Public Deposited- Abstract
- In a speech to the Council of Chief State School Officers, Bill Gates, founder of Microsoft, stated that the most significant factor impacting student achievement is excellent teaching. Hiring a candidate for a teaching position can be the most pivotal decision a principal will make. This study explored the primary characteristics that public elementary school principals in New Jersey look for when hiring teachers. Public elementary school principals in Monmouth County were recruited to participate in an online survey that asked them to identify the most important characteristics to consider when hiring a teacher. Principals were asked to rank a series of professional and personal traits in terms of their importance. Additional open-ended questions were posed to facilitate the collection of more in-depth information about preferences. Information obtained through the process was reviewed and analyzed to make determinations. Findings were discussed.
