Regulation and Governance of CRISPR Technology: Finding the Balance between Innovation and Safety

Public Deposited
Abstract
  • This thesis examines the ethical viability and possible social impacts of CRISPR, a gene-editing technology that is highly controversial, in the context of human health. More often than not, biotechnology, specifically in gene technology, has almost reached the bridging level where it can level the odds against other fields like climate change, disease management, and antibiotic resistance. The research would investigate the scientific background of CRISPR, its present applications in human health, and the ethical issues regarding its application. Through empirical data, case studies, and expert interviews, this study evaluates some real-life implications of CRISPR-gene editing and its legal challenges and acceptance into society. A public survey will illuminate societal understanding and ethical views about gene editing. The focus would be on the United States and the European Union, and how potential legislation might affect CRISPR's entry into healthcare. Ultimately, this thesis seeks to conclude whether CRISPR is an adequate and ethical tool for future generations, based on its medical promise and the vast array of consequences that could arise from it.
