Perspective Matters: Why Autism Needs Our Attention Right Now

Abstract

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a developmental disorder that impairs the ability to communicate and socialize. In recent years, the diagnosis of autism has been experiencing growth, and will become a prevalent characteristic of today’s society. With that in mind, there are many non-autistic individuals who are still uneducated about what autism can look like, leading to a general lack of understanding. The effects of this lack can appear as discrimination to autistic individuals and their families, and has so from history to today. The stigma present on autism has not disappeared and this paper will cover why it is important to redirect the understanding in more supportive ways. This paper will focus on what humanity can do to move forward in new ways.
